Cyphernaut - Articles (German-Deutsch)

In German, the indefinite and definite articles vary depending on the case. There are four cases in German: the nominative; the accusative; the dative; and the genitive. The nominative case is the most basic case and represents the standard form of nouns in dictionaries. It refers to the subject noun of the sentence i.e. The man threw the ball or in German, Der Mann warf den Ball. The accusative case refers to the direct object noun in a sentence i.e. The man threw the ball or in German, Der Mann warf den Ball. The dative case refers to the indirect object of a sentence i.e. The man threw the ball to the boy or in German, Der Mann warf den Ball zu dem Jungen. The genitive case is also called the possessive case and refers to a noun being possessed or owned by another noun i.e. the book of the boy or in German, das Buch des Jungen.

Abbreviations used in the table are:

  • M for masculine
  • F for feminine
  • N for neutral
  • SG for singular
  • PL for plural
