Italian is a Romance language that is related to French, Portuguese and Spanish. Italian has about 65 million native speakers and about 110 million total speakers worldwide. It the official language of Italy, San Marino, and Vatican City. It is also one of the official languages of Switzerland. Italian is considered to be the closest to Latin of the Romance Languages.
